'Janus is the Gatekeeper, the twin-god, the god that wounds, the presager of changes, the sun, the moon. So we identify him with the Watchman, the Twins, with the Mother, with the Forge, with the Meniscate and the Madrugad. He cannot be all these. Can he? The flamines knew the Church, knew the Dry Land, knew Elagabalus. Is he then synthesis? Or is he something else? In Gallaecia they called him Ianus Lamius, but the Obliviates are notorious for their slanders.'
'Janus ist der Torwächter, der Zwillingsgott, der Gott, der verwundet, der Prophet des Wandels, die Sonne, der Mond. Also verbinden wir ihn mit dem Wächter, den Zwillingen, der Mutter, der Schmiede, der Meniskate und der Madrugada. Er kann nicht all das sein. Oder doch? Die Flaminen kannten die Kirche, kannten das Trockene Land, kannten Elagabalus. Ist er dann Synthese? Oder etwas anderes? In Gallaecia nannte man ihn Ianus Lamius, doch die Obliviaten sind bekannt für ihre Verunglimpfungen.'

«Янус есть Привратник, бог-близнец, ранящий бог, предвестник перемен, солнце, луна. Мы отождествляем его с Дозорным, с Близнецами, с Матерью, с Кузней, с Менискатой и Мадругадой. Он не может быть всем этим. Или может? Фламины знали Церковь, знали Сушу, знали Элагабалия. Быть может, он есть части, образующие целое? Или нечто иное? В Галлеции его звали Янусом Ламием, но Забвенные известны своей склонностью к напраслине».

Description:

'Janus has, they say, not one face but two. To which I reply: why only one? Why only two? Hersault and Coseley - according to Thomas Love Denman - once agreed that Janus was 'all the gods and none'. But later, Hersault insisted he was 'all the gods', and Coseley favoured simply 'none'. Denman was a sinister dilettante, but this rings true of them both.'
'Janus habe, so sagen sie, nicht eines, sondern zwei Gesichter. Worauf ich entgegne: Warum nur eins? Warum nur zwei? Hersault und Coseley waren sich – laut Thomas Love Denman – einst einig, dass Janus 'alle Götter und keiner' sei. Doch später beharrte Hersault darauf, er sei 'alle Götter', wohingegen Coseley 'keiner' bevorzugte. Denman war ein sinistrer Dilettant, doch dies scheint den beiden ähnlich zu sein.'
