部屋は真っ白で静かだ。椅子は薄色の木材で作られていて、テーブルの上には白い大理石が飾られている。海に面した窓からは、隙間風が吹き抜ける。冬には寒くてたまらないだろう。白塗りのガラスケースには、銅線のコイルに妙に包まれた本の棚が隠されていた。
The room is bleached and quiet. The chairs are pale wood; the table is topped with white marble. A low draught blows through the ill-fitting sea-facing casement. In winter, it must be insupportably cold. A white-painted glass case holds a shelf of books, wrapped oddly in coils of copper wire.
В комнате тихо; она совершенно лишена цвета. Стулья здесь из бледного дерева, столешница из белого мрамора. Через плохо прилаженные створы окна, выходящего на море, прорывается сквозняк. Зимой здесь, наверное, стоит невыносимый холод. Выкрашенная в белый витрина скрывает целую полку книг, обёрнутых — неожиданно — медной проволокой.
Der Raum ist kalkweiß und still. Die Stühle sind aus bleichem Holz, der Tisch hat eine Platte aus weißem Marmor. Es zieht ganz schwach durch die zum Meer gewandten Fensterflügel. Im Winter muss es hier unerträglich kalt sein. In einer weiß gestrichenen Vitrine stehen einige Bücher, seltsamerweise in Kupferdraht eingewickelt.

Some of the books are exotic eighteenth-century pornography. Others are botanist's journals. Some, however, have value for our studies. A yellowing note tucked into the spine of one reads 'Watch for me. - JC.'
