• Thomas was one of the first abbots here, at the beginning of the Solar Gothic period. This bust is much more recent - a nineteenth-century bronze. An inscription reads: SPEECH, THE FIRST SWORD.

  • The Abbey chronicles record how Viking mercenaries were quartered at the Abbey. One of their number, Toke, attempted to loot the church, and his eyes are pecked out by 'thorn-beaked crows'. He repented, became a sworn brother of the abbey under the name Thomas, and rose in time to be Abbot. But that was not the end of his story...
